Get to know your city: Costa Mesa history 101

From the early and rural 1800s to 21st-century destination for creativity, Costa Mesa has always been a place where people want to be. Here’s a quick overview of this wonderful place we call home at Azulon. In 1886, the Paularino agricultural colony was established between Newport and Harbor. In 1906, the first oil wells were drilled in Costa Mesa. In 1908, the first school opened. In the 1920s, electricity becomes available in Costa Mesa and the first sidewalks were installed. In 1941, the United States Air Corps Replacement Training Center begins training new recruits to heed the call of service. In 1946, the very first Costa Mesa Fish Fry took place. It’s still a very popular event even now. In 1953, Costa Mesa becomes incorporated. In 1968, the San Diego freeway (the 405) began running just north of the city. Now in the 21st century, Costa Mesa is a leader in the creative arts with Segerstrom Concert Hall, South Coast Repertory, The Pacific Amphitheater, The Orange County Fair & year-long events, The Lab Anti-Mall, The Camp, the Orange County Museum of Art, and numerous acclaimed culinary venues.
